Voting in Person

Kansas requires photo ID to vote in person.

Accepted Photo IDs

You can use the following IDs if they are unexpired or do not display an expiration date. If you are 65 years or older, you can use an acceptable ID that is expired.

Issued by any state or district of the United States:

Driver’s license
State ID card
Concealed handgun license

Issued by municipal, county, state, or federal government office:

Employee ID
Public assistance ID card

Other forms of acceptable ID:

US Passport
Military ID
Student ID card issued by an accredited higher-education institution in Kansas
Tribal ID

Voting by Mail

Any registered Kansas voter can vote by mail.

You must include the ID number from your current Kansas driver’s license or Kansas nondriver’s identification card when you apply for your advance ballot by mail.

If you do not have one of these forms of ID, you must include a copy of an acceptable photo ID with your application.

Requesting an Absentee Ballot

If you have an unexpired Kansas driver’s license or ID, you must put its number on your application.

If you do not have one, you should send a copy of photo ID with your application.

You can use one of these IDs:

Driver’s license or ID issued by Kansas or another state
US passport
Public assistance card issued by US, Kansas, or local government
Student ID issued by institution of higher education accredited by Kansas
Tribal ID
Military ID issued by US
Employee ID issued by US, Kansas, or local government

You will also need to give your name, birthday, and the address where you want the ballot to be sent.

Returning Your Advance Ballot

You must sign the outside envelope when you complete your ballot. This signature will be checked against voter registration records.

You don’t have to send any ID with your ballot.

Election officials will inform you if the signature on your ballot envelope doesn’t match their records. You’ll have an opportunity to confirm your signature.

Voting in Person

If you are a registered Kansas voter but do not present an accepted photo ID when voting in person, you have to cast a provisional ballot.

Provisional ballots make sure eligible voters are not rejected at the polls. You need to take extra steps for your vote to count!

How to Make a Provisional Ballot Count

You must provide an accepted photo ID to your before the county canvass. You submit your ID to your county elections office in person, by mail, or electronically.

Find your local office.

Counties may canvass on the Monday following the election or on Thursday the following week.

There is an exception for voters who have religious objections to being photographed. You must sign a Declaration of Religious Objection.

Voting by Mail

If you’re not on the permanent advance voting list, you need to apply for an advance ballot each time there’s an election. Another person can help you complete the application form if you need assistance.

Turn your application in to the same county where you are registered to vote. It can be delivered to the county’s election office in person or sent by mail.

Can I fix my Kansas mail ballot if it is rejected?

Election officials will inform you if the signature on your ballot envelope doesn’t match their records. You’ll have an opportunity to confirm your signature.

In the event it is determined that your signature does not match that on file with the state, the county election officer must attempt to contact you to offer another opportunity to provide your signature for the purposes of verifying your identity. If the county election officer is unable to reach you, they may transmit a provisional ballot. However, such provisional ballot may not be counted unless it includes a signature that can be verified.
