1 Check ID Rules

Voting in Person

Florida asks voters to show a photo ID when voting in person.
If you don’t have an accepted ID, you can still vote using a provisional ballot. You must sign it.
Your vote will count if the state confirms you are allowed to vote and that your signature matches their records.

Option 1: Photo and Signature

You can show one photo ID if it has your signature.

Option 2: Two Forms of ID

If your photo ID does not include your signature, bring another identification document that does. This extra document does not need a photo.

What if I don’t have the right ID to vote in Florida?

You have the option to vote by mail if you don’t have the right ID to vote in person. You can use your Social Security number to request a Florida mail ballot.

Can I use a digital or mobile ID to vote in Florida?

You can only show a physical ID to vote in Florida. You cannot use an image, a copy, or a digital ID when voting in person.

Do I need a “REAL ID” to vote in Florida?

You do not need a “REAL ID” to vote in Florida.

REAL ID is a set of national security standards for states to follow when they issue driver’s licenses and state ID cards. Your ID will show a star if it meets REAL ID standards.

Applying for a REAL ID requires you to appear in person with a variety of documents to prove your identity.

Voting by Mail

Any registered Florida voter can request a vote-by-mail ballot. You don’t have to give a reason why you can’t vote in person.

Requesting Vote-by-Mail Ballot

You must give one of the following numbers when you request your ballot:

Florida driver’s license number*
Florida state ID card number*
Last 4 digits of Social Security number

* If you renewed or replaced your Florida driver’s license or state ID card after July 2024: You must update your voter registration with your new ID number. If you don’t, your mail ballot request could be rejected due to a change in ID numbers.

Returning Vote-by-Mail Ballot

You don’t need to provide ID with your completed ballot. The signature on your ballot envelope will be compared to the one on file with the state.

Voter Registration in Florida

You must register before you can vote in Florida.

You are eligible to vote in Florida if you meet all of the following requirements:

You are a citizen of the United States.
You a resident of Florida.
You are at least 18 years of age on Election Day.

You cannot register to vote in Florida if:

You have been convicted of a felony and your civil rights have not been restored.
You have been declared incapacitated by a court of law.

To register to vote:

You must provide your driver’s license number or state ID number if you have one.
If you do not have either of these IDs, you can use the last 4 digits of your Social Security number (SSN).
If you do not have a Social Security number, then leave that space blank on your registration form.

If you don’t provide any of these numbers or the state can’t match the number you provide to official records, you will have to show an accepted form of ID the first time you vote.

Can I register and vote on the same day in Florida?

No, Florida does not allow you to register and vote on the same day.

Florida’s deadline to register for an upcoming election is 29 days before Election Day.

If the registration deadline for an upcoming election has passed, you can still apply to register. Your registration will be processed, and you will be registered to vote in future elections.

Can I register to vote in Florida if I have been convicted of a crime?

Each state has its own laws about whether citizens with previous criminal convictions can vote.

Can I register to vote in Florida if I attend college in Florida?

College students are allowed to vote using their Florida school residence address. You can decide whether to register in your home state or in Florida if you attend school there. You may only be registered and vote in one location.

Some student IDs are accepted for voting in Florida.

Voting in Person

Florida requests photo ID to vote in person. If you vote in person and can’t present an accepted photo ID, you have to cast a provisional ballot.

Provisional ballots make sure eligible voters are not turned away from the polls.

Your provisional ballot will count if:

Your signature on the Provisional Ballot Certificate matches the signature on your voter registration record.
You are registered and voting in the correct precinct.

What if my signature does not match my voter registration record?

If your signature does not match your voter registration record, you need to prove your identity to your county’s Supervisor of Elections.

You can do this by providing one of the following:

Florida driver’s license number
Florida state ID card number
Last 4 digits of your Social Security number

You must prove your identity no later than 5 PM on the second day after the election.

Voting By Mail

Any registered Florida voter in can request to vote by mail. You don’t have to give a reason why you can’t vote in person.

Request your vote-by-mail ballot from your local Supervisor of Elections. You can request a ballot by calling your supervisor’s office, visiting it in person, or sending a written request via email, mail, and fax.

You must give an ID number to request your ballot. No ID is required when you return your completed ballot.

Can you fix your Florida mail ballot if it is rejected?

You must be notified if your ballot is missing your signature or if the signature on it does not match your signature in state records. After you are notified about a missing or mismatched signature, you must complete and return a form (called a “Vote-by-Mail Ballot Cure” Affidavit).

You must also provide a copy a photo ID is accepted for voting. If you do not have one, you can provide one of the documents listed below.

The deadline to submit the form and a copy of your ID is 5:00 pm two days after the election.
