Voter ID in Wisconsin

 

What is your plan for voting?

Voter ID rules are different based on whether you vote by absentee ballot or in person.

 


 

Voting by Absentee Ballot

Any registered Wisconsinite can choose to vote using an absentee ballot. You don’t have to give a reason for not voting in person.

 

Requesting Your Ballot

You have to apply with your to receive an absentee ballot. If you need assistance, another person can help fill out the application.

You can request your ballot online, deliver your completed application form to your municipal clerk’s office, or send it by email, mail, or fax.

Application Info

You need to include a copy of your photo ID the first time that you request an absentee ballot in Wisconsin.

You can use one of these IDs if it has your name and photo: 

Needs to be unexpired or expired after November 8, 2022:

  • Wisconsin driver’s license or ID
  • US passport
  • Military ID

Other IDs that are okay:

  • Veterans Affairs Card (can be unexpired or without an expiration date)
  • Wisconsin Tribal ID card (can be expired)
  • Certificate of Naturalization (issued within 2 years before the election date)
  • Wisconsin DMV ID Petition Receipt

Student ID:

  • Must be from a Wisconsin-accredited university, college, or technical college
  • Must have your signature
  • Must show when it was given and when it expires
  • Must expire within 2 years of when you got it
  • If the card is expired: You also need to show proof that you’re still enrolled (like a receipt for tuition fees or a schedule of your courses)

 

Returning Your Ballot

You don’t have to include ID when returning your completed ballot.

You need another adult to watch as you fill out your ballot. They will need to write their name and sign the witness section your ballot envelope.

Wisconsin does not allow you to return your ballot electronically.

 


 

Voting in Person

You must show a photo ID to vote in Wisconsin.
