Can you use a student ID to vote?

Get Ready to Vote

Every state has its own voting rules.
Select your state from the menu at the top of this page to check yours.

Decide Where to Register

The ID you need to vote depends on which state you register in.

If you go to school away from home, you can register:

  • At your home address or
  • At your school address

You can only register and vote in one place.

Think about:

  • Where you will be during the election
  • Registration and ID rules
  • Options for early voting or voting by mail
  • Important registration and ballot deadlines

Plan How to Vote

You may be able to vote:

  • In person (early or on Election Day)
  • By mail (absentee or mail ballot)

States often have different rules for each option, including ID requirements.

Think about:

  • Your schedule on voting days
  • Where your polling place is
  • Voter ID rules
  • If you qualify to vote by mail
  • Deadlines to request and return a mail ballot

Review Your State’s ID Rules

ID rules are different in every state.

Depending on where you live:

  • Some states require ID to vote.
  • Some states ask for ID, but allow other ways to confirm who you are.
  • Some states do not ask for ID at all.

Select your state from the menu at the top of this page to see what you need.

Check if Your Student ID is Accepted

Each state has a specific list of IDs that are accepted for voting.
If you would like to vote with your student ID, check if it is on your state’s list. You have the option to vote with other forms of ID.

If student ID is accepted, make sure your ID meets all state rules:

  • Does your state only accept IDs from certain schools?
  • Do you need a physical ID card (not a phone app or digital ID)?
  • Does your ID need a photo?
  • Does it need an issue date or an expiration date?
  • Do you need to bring other documents (like proof of enrollment or address)?

If your student ID is not accepted, review your state’s other ID options.
