In response to the president’s July 16 address to the nation, VoteRiders released the following statement:
Last night, the president addressed the nation, calling into question the security of our elections and calling on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act.
Here’s the truth: American elections are already secure. The SAVE America Act, far from simplifying voting, would make the process so complex for millions of eligible voters that many would not be able to vote at all.
Misinformation has real consequences that VoteRiders deals with directly. Whenever the SAVE America Act is back in the news — even though it is not the law — we get a surge in calls to our Voter ID Helpline asking if people need a birth certificate or passport to vote
Confusion is a tried-and-true voter suppression tactic. Without VoteRiders’ accurate, free information, those voters could very well stay home because of their uncertainty.
In the face of voter suppression efforts, we remain steadfast in our commitment to eliminating ID barriers to voting so every eligible American can cast a ballot that counts.
