“Proof of residency” is a document that shows you live in the state. It should show your name and a street address (PO boxes usually won’t work).

Copies are okay, but you usually need to bring printed documents (not electronic versions).

Most states want documents that are fairly recent – usually from within the last 2-3 months. Some states accept documents that were issued within a year.

Accepted Documents

Each state has its own document list, but most will accept:

  • Mail from a government agency or office
  • Housing documents (mortgage, deed, lease, or other rental agreement)
  • Voter registration card
  • Utility bills or financial account statements
  • Tax bill, statement, or receipt from the IRS or another tax office
  • Insurance policies
  • Medical bill

Other Options

Maybe you live with family, are an out-of-state student, or don’t have stable housing. You still have options. Rules vary by state, but many accept:

Affidavit (a signed statement) from the person you live with.
They say you live there and show their own proof of address. Some states also ask for proof of your relationship.

Official letter from a shelter, nursing home, or social service group.

School records that show your address, if you are a student.
Examples include: high school or college report card, transcript, or housing documents.
