A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state ID card that meets national security rules.
Some states only issue REAL IDs. But most let you choose between a REAL ID and a standard ID.
A few states charge an extra fee for REAL IDs.
Why Get a REAL ID?
The main reason to get a REAL ID is to use your driver’s license or state ID card to fly within the United States. You can also use it to enter secure federal buildings and military bases.
A standard ID still works for almost everything else – including voting.
REAL ID Requirements
You must apply in person to get a REAL ID.
What You Need
Bring documents that prove your:
- Identity (full legal name and date of birth)
- Social Security number

You need to provide two documents with your home address.
Citizens can often use one document (US birth certificate, passport, naturalization certificate, or citizenship certificate) to prove both identity and citizenship. You may need extra documents if your legal name has changed.

When you gather your documents:
- Bring physical documents only. You cannot show any required document on a phone or screen.
