What to Bring

What you need depends on your state’s rules:

  • Some states let you write your Social Security number on your application. Paper proof is requested only if an electronic Social Security Administration (SSA) database check fails.
  • Other states require all first-time applicants to present their Social Security card or another physical document  showing their number (like a W-2 or 1099 tax document).
  • There are also states that allow you to apply for a standard license or ID card without providing a Social Security number. You cannot get a REAL ID card without one.

How to Replace Social Security Card

Only the SSA can issue a replacement Social Security card.

There is no cost to replace your Social Security card.

Some organizations advertise online that they can help you get your Social Security card for a fee.

We do not recommend working with these organizations, even if their name makes it seem like they are a government organization.
