Driver’s licenses and state ID cards are both government-issued photo IDs from your state.
Either one works if you need a photo ID to vote, open a bank account, apply for a job, prove your age, get benefits, etc.
Both IDs also come from the same state office.
Driver’s License
A driver’s license serves as an official photo ID and allows you to drive.
To get a driver’s license, you may need to take a vision test, a knowledge (multiple-choice) test, or a road (driving) test.
What does it cost?
The cost of a driver’s license is different in each state. A license often costs between $25 and $50. Your state may charge more or less.
You may also need to pay for:
- Learner’s permit fee
- Driver education classes or driving lessons
- Test or retest fees
- Reinstatement fees
These extra costs usually apply if you are getting your first license, if your license expired more than one or two years ago, or if your license was suspended or revoked.
State ID Card
State ID cards are for identification only. Many people who do not drive use a state ID card as their main photo ID.
You do not need to take any tests to get one.
What does it cost?
A state ID card usually costs less than a driver’s license. Fees vary by state – most range between $10 and $35.
Some states offer free or reduced-fee ID cards. You may qualify if you:
- Need an ID to vote
- Are over a certain age
- Have a low income
- Are a veteran
- Have a disability
- Are experiencing homelessness
