Florida ID Requirements for Voting In Person

Florida requests photo ID to vote in person. Vote and sign a provisional ballot if you don’t have an accepted ID. You ballot will count if the state verifies your eligibility and signature. 

Accepted Photo IDs

Your photo ID must have your signature on it. If it doesn’t have your signature (like a passport card), bring an extra document that does (like your credit card or library card). This extra ID document does not need a photo. 

You can show one of these photo IDs: 
Must be unexpired 

  • Florida driver’s license 
  • Florida state ID card 
  • US passport or passport card  
  • Military identification  
  • Student ID 
  • Public assistance ID
  • Veterans Health ID card issued by US Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Retirement center ID 
  • Neighborhood association ID
  • Debit or credit card
  • Florida concealed weapon license
  • Employee ID issued by US, Florida, or local government

You have the option to vote by mail if you don’t have the right ID to vote in person. You can use your Social Security number to request a Florida mail ballot.

If you vote in person and can’t present an accepted photo ID, you have to cast a provisional ballot. 

Provisional ballots make sure eligible voters are not turned away from the polls.

Your provisional ballot will count if: 

  • Your signature on the Provisional Ballot Certificate matches the signature on your voter registration record.
  • You are registered and voting in the correct precinct.

If your signature does not match your voter registration record, you need to prove your identity to your county’s Supervisor of Elections.

You can do this by providing one of the following:

  • Florida driver’s license number
  • Florida state ID card number
  • Last 4 digits of your Social Security number

You must prove your identity no later than 5 PM on the second day after the election.

You do not need a “REAL ID” to vote in Florida.

REAL ID is a set of national security standards for states to follow when they issue driver’s licenses and state ID cards. Your ID will show a star if it meets REAL ID standards.

Applying for a REAL ID requires you to appear in person with a variety of documents to prove your identity.

Florida ID Requirements for Voting By Mail

Any registered voter can request to vote by mail in Florida. You don’t have to give a reason why you can’t vote in person.

Requesting a Vote-by-Mail Ballot 

Request your vote-by-mail ballot from your local Supervisor of Elections.  You can request a ballot by calling your supervisor’s office, visiting it in person, or sending a written request via email, mail, and fax.

You must provide one of the following numbers when you request your ballot:

  • Florida driver’s license number
  • Florida state ID card number 
  • Last 4 digits of Social Security number

Returning a Vote-by-Mail Ballot 

You are not required to provide ID when you return your completed ballot. The signature on your ballot envelope will be compared to the one on file with the state.

Frequently Asked Questions

You must be notified if your ballot is missing your signature or if the signature on it does not match your signature in state records.

After you are notified about a missing or mismatched signature, you must complete and return a form (“Vote-by-Mail Ballot Cure” Affidavit – English PDF / Español PDF)

You must also provide one of the following: 

  • Copy of a of photo ID accepted for voting 
  • If you do not have an accepted photo ID, include a copy of a document that has your name and current address:
    • Current utility bill
    • Bank statement
    • Government check
    • Paycheck
    • Government document (excluding voter information card)

The deadline to submit the form and a copy of your ID  is no later than 5:00 pm two days after the election.
