About VoteRiders

VoteRiders is a non-partisan, non-profit organization with a mission to ensure that all citizens are able to exercise their freedom to vote. VoteRiders informs and helps citizens to secure their voter ID as well as inspires and supports organizations, local volunteers, and communities to sustain voter ID education and assistance efforts.

Kathleen Unger founded VoteRiders in 2012 as a direct response to the increasing number of stringent voter ID laws across the country.

Today, our team works alongside thousands of partner organizations and an ever-growing community of 10,000 volunteers across the country.

Vision and Mission

VoteRiders’ vision is a thriving American democracy with an empowered, civically engaged, diverse, and representative electorate. In such a democracy, voter ID laws do not prevent any eligible voters from having a voice at the ballot box.

VoteRiders’ mission is to ensure that no eligible voter is prevented from casting a ballot that counts due to voter ID laws, either directly from lack of acceptable ID or indirectly
because of voter confusion.

VoteRiders educates voters and assists citizens to secure their voter ID. We inspire and support organizations, volunteers, and communities to sustain such voter ID education and assistance efforts.

VoteRiders Tools and Services

Voter ID Education

Our website and digital tools offer up-to-date information in English and Spanish about voter ID laws for both in-person and absentee voting in all 50 states and DC. We constantly monitor changes and update all details accordingly.

We provide information about voter ID requirements for every voter in every state, via our toll-free Voter ID Helpline (866-ID-2-VOTE), online resources, educational wallet cards and our on-the-ground teams.

Voters can always connect with a VoteRiders team member through our Chatbot, Helpline, and website to ask questions and receive free assistance.

Voter ID Assistance

VoteRiders works directly with voters, both virtually and in-person, to ensure they have the ID they need to cast a ballot that counts. We provide personalized assistance for voters, including:

  • Covering the cost of required documents (like birth certificates or Social Security cards) and ID
  • Arranging and paying for transportation to their local ID-issuing office
  • Answering questions about their state’s voter ID laws
  • Providing pro bono legal assistance with certain document issues

We receive referrals from partner organizations who share information about our services through their networks, and also receive self-referrals from voters who find us through social media, internet searches and other means. We work one-on-one with these voters to assist them with their documents and IDs.

Voter ID Clinics

We collaborate with partner organizations to host Voter ID Clinics in person at the partner’s site or at another agreed location. Clinics are designed to assist multiple voters with their documents and IDs during a scheduled time period. These events make it easy and convenient for voters to access one-on-one assistance from VoteRiders staff and trained volunteers. Clinics can be scheduled on a recurring basis depending on voter demand and partner support.

Partnerships

We partner with local, state and national organizations to find, inform, and help voters with voter ID, especially those most at risk of losing their right to vote. Our Partner Organizations are crucial to the work we do. Their community connections and volunteer programs multiply and sustain our impact across the country.
