North Carolina Voter Eligibility Requirements

You must register before you can vote in North Carolina.

You are eligible to vote in North Carolina if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are a citizen of the United States.
  • You have lived in the North Carolina county where you are registered for at least 30 days on Election Day.
  • You are at least 18 years of age on Election Day. 

You cannot register to vote in North Carolina if:

  • You are currently serving a felony sentence (including probation, post-release supervision, or parole).

North Carolin Voter Registration ID Requirements

To register to vote:

  • You must provide your driver’s license number or state ID number if you have one.
  • If you do not have either of these IDs, you can use the last 4 digits of your Social Security number (SSN).
  • If you do not have a Social Security number, then leave that space blank on your registration form.

If you don’t provide any of these numbers, you will verify your identity by showing an accepted ID the first time you vote.

Yes, North Carolina allows you to register and vote on the same day during the early voting period.

Voters can register (or update their registration) and vote in person at any early voting site in their county. Same-day registration is not available on Election Day.

You must present proof of residency with your name and current address. Accepted proof of residency includes:

  • North Carolina driver’s license or state ID card
  • Photo ID issued by US, North Carolina, or local government
  • Copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document
  • Student living on campus can provide a document issued by their school listing their name and on-campus housing address (Note: some schools may provide the county board of elections with a list of student residing in campus housing)

You also need to show a photo ID that is accepted for voting.

The deadline to register online or by mail is 25 days before Election Day.

We recommend that you check your voter information before each election’s voter registration deadline. This will give you time to submit a new registration if your information is missing or incorrect.

College students are allowed to vote using their North Carolina school residence address. You can decide if you prefer to register in your home state or in North Carolina if you attend school there. You may only be registered and vote in one location.

You can use a student ID to vote if it meets North Carolina’s voter ID requirements.
