New Hampshire Voter Eligibility Requirements

You must register before you can vote in New Hampshire.

You are eligible to vote in New Hampshire if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You are a citizen of the United States.
  • You are a resident of New Hampshire.
  • You are at least 18 years of age on Election Day.

You cannot register to vote in New Hampshire if:

  • You are currently incarcerated for a felony conviction.

New Hampshire Voter Registration ID Requirements

New Hampshire requires you to present documents proving your age, citizenship, identity, and residency when registering to vote. Documents can be provided physically or electronically. 

Proof of Citizenship 

You can use any of the following documents to prove your US citizenship:

  • Birth certificate 
  • Passport or passport card 
  • Naturalization documents 
  • Other accepted documentation of US citizenship

Proof of Residency 

Your proof of residency must show your name and voter registration address.

If you have one of the following documents, present it when registering to vote:

  • New Hampshire driver’s license
  • New Hampshire state ID card
  • New Hampshire vehicle registration
  • Photo ID issued by government (with current address)
  • Government check, benefits document, or tax document

If you do not have any of the documents listed above, you can sign a form and provide an alternate proof of residency. Alternate options include:

  • Document or website from your school listing your name and address (address can be on or off campus)
  • Rental agreement, lease, or property deed
  • Utility bill, government document, or USPS form (including new address confirmation email)
  • School enrollment documents for your child
  • Note from homeless shelter or other service provider confirming they will receive US mail sent to you at address

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, New Hampshire allows you to register and vote at your polling place on Election Day. Your must provide proof of citizenship, age, and residency to register.

You also need to show a photo ID that is accepted for voting.

Otherwise, the deadline to register is 6-13 days before Election Day (check with your local clerk).

You can check your voter information using this form. If you cannot find your information, contact your city or town clerk.

We recommend that you check your voter information before each election’s voter registration deadline. This will give you time to submit a new registration if your information is missing or incorrect.  

You can also use the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s Voter Information Portal to check your registration and find your polling location.

Each state has its own laws about whether citizens with previous criminal convictions can vote.

College students are allowed to vote using their New Hampshire school residence address. You can decide if you prefer to register in your home state or in New Hampshire if you attend school there. You may only be registered and vote in one location.
