Voter ID in Wyoming

Wyoming is a strict voter ID state.

Changing Your Legal Name

You must file a formal request with your county’s District Court to change your name in Wyoming. You need to live in a county for at least two years before you can change your name in its court.

You will be required to publish notice of your name change in a newspaper for a specific period of time.

If the court approves your name change, you will receive a court order that can be used to update the name on your ID documents.

Submit a written request to Wyoming’s Vital Statistics Services to amend your birth certificate.

To change the name on your Wyoming birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • signed letter to Vital Statistics Services stating the information you would like updated
  • Application for Correction form (PDF)
  • certified copy of name-change court order
  • copy of your current ID
  • payment of applicable fee(s)

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

You must update your name with the Social Security Administration before you can change your name on a Wyoming-issued ID.

Visit a Wyoming Driver Services location to change the name on your license or state ID.

Bring a certified copy of your name-change court order or other documents demonstrating your legal name change.

You will need to surrender any current state-issued ID card.


Updating Gender Markers

Submit a written request to Wyoming’s Vital Statistics Services to amend your birth certificate.

You will need to provide proof you have undergone gender affirmation surgery and a certified court order confirming your gender transition.

  • Specify court order is for a new birth certificate.
  • Proof of surgery: You are required to submit a physician’s letter (on letterhead) confirming that you have undergone gender affirmation surgery.

To apply for an updated Wyoming birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • signed letter to Vital Statistics Services stating the information you would like updated
  • certified copy of court order confirming gender transition
  • physician’s letter (proof of gender affirmation surgery)
  • copy of your current ID
  • payment of applicable fee(s)

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

Visit a Wyoming Driver Services location and submit a completed Gender Designation Change Request form (PDF).

The form must be signed by you and a licensed medical physician or Social Services provider.
