Voter ID in Utah

Utah is a strict voter ID state.

First-time Utah voters must present an unexpired Utah driver license or ID card.

After your first election in Utah, you will be required to show an acceptable ID to confirm your identity when voting in person.

All active registered Utah voters will automatically receive a mail-in ballot before each election.

First-time Utah voters must include a copy of an unexpired Utah driver license or ID card with their completed ballot.

Changing Your Legal Name

You must file a formal request with your county’s court to change your name in Utah. You must live in the county for one year before filing.

If the court approves your name change, you will receive a court order that can be used to update the name on your ID documents.

Submit a request to Utah’s Office of Vital Records and Statistics to amend your birth certificate.

To change the name on your Utah birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • Amendment of a Record by Court Order (PDF)
  • certified copy of name-change court order
  • copy of acceptable ID
  • payment of applicable fee(s)

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

Visit a Utah Driver License office and apply for a replacement license or state ID.

You will need to provide acceptable documentation including the certified copy of your name-change court order and your current driver license or state ID (if any).


Updating Gender Markers

Utah’s Office of Vital Records and Statistics will amend the gender marker on your birth certificate if it receives a court order.

To update the gender marker on your Utah birth certificate, you will need to provide:

The Utah Department of Public Safety website does not address changing the gender marker on your state-issued ID.

You may be able to update your Utah driver license or state ID by presenting a passport or birth certificate with an amended gender marker. It is possible to amend via court order.
