Voter ID in Maine

Maine is not a voter ID state.

Registered voters do not need to provide an ID when they vote in person, except for some first-time voters.

Changing Your Legal Name

You must file a formal request with your county’s Probate Court to change your name in Maine. The process, requirements, and difficulty to obtain this court order vary by county.

You will be required to publish notice of your name change in a local newspaper for a specific period of time. It is possible that this requirement can be waived for your safety.

If the court approves your name change, you will receive a court order that can be used to update the name on your ID documents.

You are required to inform other organizations and branches of government, generally within thirty (30) days of the date your name change takes effect.

Submit a request to the Maine Vital Records Office to amend your birth certificate.

To apply for an amended Maine birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • notarized application form (PDF)
  • Request to Amend a Vital Record (PDF)
  • copy of valid photo ID
  • payment of applicable fee(s)

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

You need to update the name on your Maine driver’s license or state ID within thirty (30) days of legally changing your name.

You must update your name with the Social Security Administration before you can change your name on a Maine-issued ID.

Visit a BMV office to update your Maine driver’s license or state ID. You will need to provide your current state-issued ID and documentation to demonstrate your legal name change (for example: name-change court order).


Updating Gender Markers

Submit a request to the Maine Vital Records Office to amend your birth certificate.

Maine allows residents to mark M, F, or X on their birth certificate.

To apply for an amended Maine birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • notarized application form (PDF)  
  • signed declaration by qualified healthcare professional (PDF
  • copy of valid photo ID
  • payment of applicable fees
  • name-change request form (PDF) and court order (if applicable)

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

Visit a BMV office to update the gender marker on your Maine driver’s license or state ID. You will need to provide a completed Gender Designation Form (PDF) and current state-issued ID.
