Voter ID in Idaho

Idaho is a non-strict voter ID state.

You will be asked to show an acceptable photo ID to confirm your identity when voting in person.

If you are a registered voter and cannot bring an acceptable ID to the polling place, you may sign a sworn statement and vote a regular ballot.

Changing Your Legal Name

You must file a formal request with your county’s district court to change your name in Idaho.

You will be required to publish notice of your name change for a specific period of time.

If the court approves your name change, you will receive a court order that can be used to update the name on your ID documents.

Submit a written request to Idaho’s Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics to amend your birth certificate.

To change the name on your Idaho birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • written request stating the information you would like updated
  • certified copy of name-change court order
  • signed and notarized Idaho Vital Statistics Certificate Request form (PDF)
  • copy of government-issued photo ID
  • payment of any applicable fee(s)

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

You must update your name with the Social Security Administration before you can change your name on a Idaho-issued ID.

Visit Idaho DMV office to change the name on your license or state ID.

You will need to provide a certified copy of the name-change court order.


Updating Gender Markers

Submit a request to Idaho’s Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics to amend your birth certificate.

You are not required to provide a medical document to amend the gender marker on your Idaho birth certificate.

To apply for an updated Idaho birth certificate, you will need to provide:

  • signed and notarized Application to Change the Indicator of Sex to Reflect Gender Identity form (PDF)
  • complete Certificate Request form (PDF)
  • copy of government-issued photo ID
  • payment of applicable fee(s)

Idaho passed a law in 2020 that would have restricted gender marker changes on the state’s birth certificates. This law was deemed unconstitutional by a federal district court. The state cannot prevent transgender individuals from changing the gender marker on their birth certificate.

Note: You must update your birth certificate with the state where you were born.

Visit Idaho DMV office and submit a completed Sex (Gender) Designation form (PDF). The form must be signed by a physician.

DMV employees are prohibited from requesting additional gender-related information (beyond what’s required on the applicable forms) or otherwise asking questions about your private medical history or records.

You will also need to present your current state-issued ID.
