Voter ID in Washington

What is your plan for voting?

Voter ID rules are different based on how you decide to cast your ballot.

Voting by Mail

Every registered voter in Washington automatically gets a mail ballot sent to the address in their voter registration. You don’t have to ask for it, and you don’t need a special reason to vote by mail.

You don’t need to include ID with your completed ballot.

Washington only allows military and overseas voters to return their ballots online.

Voting in Person

If you choose to vote in person, the signature on your ballot has to match the one your voter registration record.

If they don’t match, you will need to show photo ID. You can use IDs like:

  • Driver’s license or state ID
  • Student ID
  • Tribal ID
  • Employer ID
  • US Passport

Your ID should be unexpired or have no expiration date.
