CBS17: VoteRiders group in NC helping voters obtain the proper ID

BY GREG FUNDERBURG, CBS17 — SEPTEMBER 28, 2024

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — VoteRiders North Carolina Coordinator Jenny McKenney has seen firsthand the challenges of getting a proper ID for voting.

“There have been delays with DMV’s due to staffing shortages and shortages of appointments,” said McKenney.

CBS 17 has reported the challenges of getting a driver’s license and the long wait times. McKenney says VoteRiders is on a dedicated mission to ensure North Carolinians comply with the new voter ID law, which requires voters to present a valid ID at the polls.

And she’s spending much time telling them about an alternative. McKenney says you can go to the county elections office to provide your name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number and get a photo taken, which can be used as a valid ID at the polls.

“You do not have to produce any documents, so that is what makes it such an easy option, especially for voters who may have lost the documents the DMV may ask for, like a social security card or birth certificate,” she said.

But if you still want to get a state-issued ID, VoterRiders helps voters obtain birth certificates, social security cards, and state IDs. They even offer rideshare services to people who need to get the necessary documents to vote, making the process as smooth as possible.
